How do I dispute a Centauro damage claim?
What Centauro's terms in Spain, Portugal and Italy say about damage price lists, deposits, card charges, cleaning and fuel, and how to reply before paying.
Before the due date
- Dispute both liability and amount in writing before the deadline in the claim letter, by replying to the claim email or through the contact form on centauro.net, without paying or admitting fault.
- Ask Centauro for the signed return contract showing the damage, the original photo files with metadata, the damage list line applied, any repair invoice or appraisal, and the inspection time after your return.
- Check whether the price list line charged matches the damage shown and whether Centauro told you the reason and justified the amount before any card debit, as its Spanish and Italian terms require.
How Centauro handles damage found after return
Centauro’s terms describe a staff inspection at pickup and at return, with damage written into the rental contract, and you can ask to be there. The commercial conditions that apply in all Centauro countries say, in the Spanish version: “Puedes solicitar acompañar a nuestro equipo durante la revisión del vehículo” (you can ask to accompany our team while the car is inspected). The Portuguese and Italian versions say the same.
Until the car is back, it is your risk. The Spanish general conditions state: “EL CLIENTE será responsable de cualquier daño ocasionado al vehículo una vez finalizado el plazo de vigencia del arrendamiento y hasta que proceda a la devolución del mismo” (the customer is liable for any damage to the car after the rental period ends and until it is returned). A late return also costs the extra time plus €50 per day.
The documents we read describe no key-box return procedure, do not mention photos, and set no deadline for Centauro to notify you of damage or for you to object. What they do regulate is the charge itself: Centauro may debit your card “previa información del concepto por el que se realiza y justificación de su importe” (after informing you of the reason and justifying the amount).

What Centauro’s terms say, country by country
Spain. The general conditions (version V06JUN/2026) set your liability for damage by the “Lista de Importe de Daños” from the commercial conditions. Under the default cover (CDW and theft protection) you are liable up to the excess stated in your contract, and the limit only applies if the damage is declared. The deposit is €1,100 to €2,600 depending on the car; the Smart Pack removes both deposit and excess. In certain cases you answer for the full amount under any cover, “incluido el lucro cesante derivado de la imposibilidad de alquilar el vehículo” (including lost profit from not being able to rent the car out): for example driving under alcohol or drugs, damage to keys and upholstery, or damage abroad without the required cross-border cover. Centauro’s Spanish damage list (revision B, 17 April 2025) prices small wing damage at €215 front and €240 rear, severe wing damage at €505 front and €1,620 rear, and extra cleaning at €75. The general conditions cap cleaning at €100 “previa justificación del importe del servicio prestado” (after justifying the cost of the service). The contract is under Spanish law, consumer jurisdiction rules apply, and Centauro refuses resolution through the transport arbitration board. See the Spain guide.
Portugal. The Portuguese conditions (version V05may/2026) price damage from the “Lista de Valor de Prejuízos”, which they say is based on “os preços médios praticados no mercado pelas diversas oficinas de reparação” (the average market prices of repair workshops). You are liable for damage after the rental period until the car is returned, and charged up to the maximum excess in case of damage. The deposit is €1,100 to €2,600, extra cleaning is capped at €100 with prior justification, and the contract is under Portuguese law. See the Portugal guide.
Italy. The Italian conditions (version V05JUL/2025, Centauro Rent a Car Italy) put a duty on you at pickup: “Al momento della consegna IL CLIENTE è tenuto a verificare che le condizioni del veicolo siano rispondenti a quanto riportato sul report e a segnalare eventuali danni non rilevati” (at pickup the customer must check the car against the report and point out any damage not recorded). Liability follows the damage amount list in the commercial conditions. Without Smart cover a block of €900 to €2,300 is placed on your card and released about 10 days after the rental. You must report accidents or damage within 48 hours. Consumers’ disputes go exclusively to the consumer’s own court under Italian law. See the Italy guide.
Fuel in all three countries. At Centauro’s own offices the policy is “Lleno-Vacío” (Cheio-Vazio in Portugal, Pieno-Vuoto in Italy): you pay for the fuel at the start, and after return Centauro refunds the unused fuel based on the level the car was delivered with. The fuel price follows the market price.
Where Centauro damage claims are often weak
These points only help if you did not cause the damage. If you did, the amount can still be checked: repair invoice against estimate, fees, VAT and loss of use.
- The custody gap. Centauro’s terms describe a staff check at return with damage written into the contract. If a damage claim arrives that is not on your return contract, ask when and by whom it was recorded, and where the car was in between.
- Photos without metadata. The terms do not require photos. Check whether Centauro can show images with a date, time and place that tie the damage to your rental.
- A price list instead of an invoice. A list amount is not a repair bill. Check whether the list line matches the damage, front or rear, small or severe. For full-amount claims with lost profit or immobilisation costs, check whether Centauro produced invoices; the Spanish terms speak of “gastos justificados” (justified costs).
- Fees above their own price list. Check a cleaning charge against the €75 on the Spanish list and the €100 cap with prior justification in the general conditions.
- Their own terms against them. Check whether Centauro told you the reason and justified the amount before debiting your card, whether a Smart Pack customer was charged an excess, and whether unused fuel was refunded.
How to respond to a Centauro damage claim
- Do not pay and do not admit fault. Wait until you have seen the evidence behind the amount.
- Dispute in writing. Use the customer service and complaints channel Centauro names in its terms (the contact form on centauro.net) or reply to the claim email, keep a copy, and dispute both liability and amount. Even without a deadline in the terms, reply promptly.
- Request the evidence a solid claim would have. Ask for the signed return contract with recorded damage, the original photo files with metadata, the damage list line applied, any repair invoice or appraisal, and the time and place of the inspection after your return.
- Check your card statement. If a damage amount you dispute has been debited, tell Centauro in writing that you were not given a justification (if that is the case) and contact your card issuer.
- Compare the claim with the terms. The terms lookup opens Centauro’s document for your rental country, so you can check the list prices, deposit and fuel refund.
What to do next
Gather the claim, the rental contract with the pickup and return damage records, your own photos and any emails from Centauro. The five-question self-check shows which weak points apply. For a written assessment, the free Claim Check reads the claim, lists its weaknesses, sets out three next steps and checks your deadline.

Questions
Can Centauro charge my card for damage after I returned the car?
Centauro's Spanish terms authorise charges to the card you gave, but only after informing you of the reason for the charge and justifying the amount. The Italian terms say the same. If a debit appears without that information, or you dispute it, object to Centauro in writing and contact your card issuer.
How does Centauro calculate the cost of damage?
Centauro uses a damage price list per country rather than a repair invoice. The Portuguese terms say the list is based on average market prices of repair workshops. Centauro's Spanish list (revision B, 17 April 2025) prices small damage to a wing at €215 front and €240 rear. Check that the line charged matches the damage shown.
Does Centauro's Smart Pack cover all damage?
No. The Smart Pack removes the excess and the deposit, but Centauro's Spanish damage list charges underbody and radiator damage up to the maximum excess and damage from negligent driving without an excess limit. Keys, jack and other loose parts are excluded from every cover, and driving under alcohol or drugs makes you liable in full.
How much deposit does Centauro block on my card?
Without the Smart Pack, the Spanish and Portuguese terms state a deposit of €1,100 to €2,600 depending on the car, and the Italian terms a block of €900 to €2,300. The block is released about 10 days after the rental ends. With the Smart Pack no deposit is required.
What does Centauro charge for cleaning and fuel after return?
The general terms in Spain, Portugal and Italy cap an extra cleaning charge at €100, with the amount justified first, and Centauro's Spanish damage list shows €75 for extra cleaning. At Centauro's own offices you pay for the fuel at pickup, and unused fuel is refunded after return based on the level the car was delivered with.
